Keep Calm and Avoid Comma Splices!
But first, what is a comma splice?
A comma splice happens when a writer joins two sentences incorrectly with a comma.
For example, “I can prove I was at the beach all day, I have a sunburn to show for it!”
The example has two sentences:
- I can prove I was at the beach all day.
- I have a sunburn to show for it!
There are three ways to avoid making a comma splice:
- Write each sentence separately
- Join the sentences with a semicolon
- Use a conjunction to join the sentences (Video: “Conjunction Junction“)
- “I can prove I was at the beach all day and I have a sunburn to show for it!”
Remember that a sentence is one complete thought or idea. You shouldn’t use a little comma to connect two powerful sentences.
